4 Things to Do Right When you Wake Up

Setting the right tone for the day starts as soon as you wake up. If you’re not in the right frame of mind right out of bed, you can bet that your mood throughout the day will reflect that. To help you start the day off on a happy note, try these five things to do right when you wake up.

Get in the Right Head Space

Waking up on the wrong side of the bed can affect your entire day. Leaving the house in a bad mood and experiencing a horrible drive or subway ride as you make your way into work will only amplify this. So, before you even climb out of bed, take a few minutes to get in the right headspace. When you wake, give yourself at least five minutes to lay there and contemplate all that you are happy, grateful and proud of. By simply focusing on what you’re grateful for, it will place your mind in a happy and joyful state.

Take a Moment to Plan Your Day

Do you ever feel like your scrambling to get organized first thing in the morning? This can also throw off your mind frame and throw you into a fit of stress. But you can prevent this from happening by mentally planning out your day. So after you’ve got yourself in the right headspace, take an extra minute to think about what you need to do throughout the day and how you will accomplish it. Setting a plan for yourself will help you to prepare for the day ahead.

Stretch and Breath

Once you finally pull yourself out of bed, take a minute to stretch and do some deep breathing. Lift your arms up high above your head, make some gentle lunges, stretch out your hips and calves, and really flex those muscles for a good healthy stretch. Follow this by a few simple rounds of deep breathing. Taking a few moments to stretch and breathe is another great habit of doing right when you wake to help prime your body and mind for your day.

Eat a Healthy Breakfast

Rushing out the door and skipping breakfast won’t do your body or your state of mind any favours. If you’re hungry and rush out to endure the traffic without having anything in your stomach, this can be a recipe for disaster when it comes to your mood. The chances are very high that you will become irritable and angry in no time. Instead, start your day off with a well-balanced breakfast full of vitamins and nutrients. But whatever you decide to eat, just make sure you eat something. Starting the day off on an empty stomach is never a wise decision.
