How To Make Self-Care A Priority
In this fast-paced and modern day and age, it’s not surprising at all that the majority of us simply forget how to take care of ourselves every once in a while. With so many things to be responsible for, like home, work, family, and finances, we often lose sight of the ways in which we can treat ourselves when we need it the most. In order to maintain a happy and healthy life, it is absolutely essential to be aware of the different ways in which you can take care of your mind, body, and soul. Below are a few small steps you can take in order to make self-care a priority.
Nourish Your Mind & Body
Nourishment comes in all sorts of forms. In order to nourish the mind, make it your aim to think constructive thoughts whenever you find yourself becoming stressed and agitated. Pause for a minute, take a few deep breaths, and think about the good things in your life. Of course, this practice is way easier said than done, since it takes a lot of time and effort to change a certain mind set you’ve been stuck in. Settle down with a good book or browse through uplifting quotes. To nourish your body, it’s essential to start eating a healthy, balanced diet, if you aren’t doing so already. Cook your meals with nutrient-rich ingredients, and research different ways in which you can incorporate more fruit and vegetables into your life. Exercise more, even if it’s just going for a ten-minute walk in the morning.

If your calendar and diary are full of appointments, meetings, and other “work stuff”… then why shouldn’t you treat self-care the same as you would other “essential” tasks? Even if it means setting aside that optional meeting that isn’t really necessary and replacing it with a massage appointment, yoga class, or individual therapy session, you’re doing the right thing. So many people are workaholics, and they don’t even know it. Too many people push themselves to the limit for their career and/or financial reasons, without stopping to consider how they could actually take care of themselves a little better. Treat self-care as you would anything else in your diary. It is essential for your health, and you should absolutely set aside as much time as you can for it.
Rewrite Your To-Do List
Many people, after waking up and getting their caffeine fix, write a to-do list for the day ahead. It might include going to the store, doing some chores around the house, getting that project finished at work, and heading to that important meeting at the end of the day. Or, it could be the total opposite. Whatever you’ve got on your to-do list, you’re probably guilty of cramming too many things into that 24-hour span. Rather than aiming to do everything you possibly can in the space of just a day, start living life at a slower pace. Only do the things that are absolutely necessary and make time for the things that bring joy to you and those around you. The less important tasks can wait until tomorrow, or the day after. When you start seeing the bigger picture of life in this way, you’ll gradually see your stress levels decrease.
